Beyond the Mirror
a positive body & mind initiative
at the School of Ballet Co.Laboratory
The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory believes in the development of the whole dancer. In addition to dancers’ technical training, focus on the mental/physical health and intellectual development of each dancer is made a priority through our Beyond the Mirror programs including:
Company Mentorship
Balanced Cross Training
Professional Performances
Trainee Program
Teaching Assistant Program
Body & Mind Health and Professional Development Seminars
Company Mentorship
At Ballet Co.Laboratory, we believe in students having direct access to our Company dancers as mentors. Every student in Levels IV+ are paired with a Company dancer as their mentor. Throughout the year the mentor and mentee will support each other in their training and attend studio events together, like educational seminars and holiday celebrations.
Balanced Cross Training
Dancers receive cross-training each week in addition to their ballet technique to help mold a well-rounded dancer. As students’ progress they will train in Progressing Ballet Technique, an innovative body conditioning and strengthening program for students to work on muscle memory, core stability, placement, and alignment. Rotating classes in modern, contemporary, jazz, and other styles of dance will also be offered throughout the year during their class times.
Professional Performances
Students in the Beginning Ballet, Level 1-6 and the Boys & Mens Programs have the opportunity to perform on stage several times a year, including two productions alongside Company dancers in Winter and Spring.
Trainee Program
Advanced Level students ages 15-20 have the opportunity to study alongside the Company as Trainees. Trainees are advanced level students who also study during the day three times a week in Company class and rehearsal. Auditions are held every year for the trainee program. Trainees participate in all season performances. LEARN MORE
Teaching Assistant Program
The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory offers teaching assistant opportunities to students starting at Level V. Here, students work alongside a Teaching Artist to gain an understanding of the role of an instructor and all it entails. Our teaching assistants engage in hands-on training that not only develops their potential in teaching, but deepens their own dance training through a different perspective.
Body & Mind Health/Professional Development Seminars
Throughout the year, dancers and families have the opportunity to attend seminars about dancer health, foot health in pointe work, body image positivity, dance anatomy and more. Advanced students also attend a weekly seminar in which they learn to build a resume, dive into dance history, discuss social justice practices in the arts, explore college dance and conservatory options and more.
