Nieya Amezquita
Summer 2021 Guest Teaching Artist
Originally from Decatur, GA, Nieya Amezquita trained at the DanceMakers of Atlanta under the guidance of Lynise Heard. She trained in ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, pointe, tap, and musical theater for the majority of her childhood. There she got the opportunity to compete around the country and work with a wide variety of artists such as Travis Wall, Andrew Winghart, Cindy Salgado, and Martha Nichols.
In 2019, she graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in Dance and a BS in Psychology. During her time at UGA, she practiced ballet, contemporary and different branches of African movement which eventually led her to become a founding company member of both CADE:NCE and Linds&Co. These companies allowed her to perform nationally and internationally for organizations such as American College Dance Association, Rettleford Nex Conference, Collegium for African Diaspora, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Outside of company work she seized the opportunity to intern for Dance Canvas: DC Next, worked for the Joffrey Ballet School, received her Barre fitness instructor certification, taught at East Athens Educational Dance Center, studied in Portugal with the Addo Platform, and made her debut as a choreographer where her work was chosen to represent UGA at ACDA.
Currently she is dancing professionally in Minneapolis with Threads Dance Project, Rhythmically Speaking and working with local freelance artists. Nieya hopes to continue to be a part of and create works that open the gate to conversations about the social, racial and psychological state of our society today.
